History

The City of Chicago acquired this park site in 1958, transferring it to the Chicago Park District the following year. In 1973, the park district officially designated the property Maple Park. The park was one of a number of properties named for plants and trees at that time. Maple trees are a major component of northern temperate forests, providing food for many birds and mammals. The 13 maple species native to North America range in size from shrubs to large trees. Widely recognized for their colorful autumn leaves, maples produce syrup that flows in the early spring, before leaves appear.
