History

Christiana Park is one of many small parks created by the Bureau of Parks and Recreation to meet the growing recreational demands of post-World War II Chicago. The Bureau acquired this .14-acre North Lawndale site in 1952, developing it as a playlot and transferring it to the Chicago Park District in 1957 pursuant to the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act.  In 2017, the City transferred adjacent property to the Park District doubling the size of the park.

The park is named for adjacent Christiana Avenue. Christiana is the former name of Oslo, the capital of Norway. Around 1900, Chicago was said to be "the only City in the world with more Norwegians than Christiana."
